Drinking water from large central plants in Germany continues to be of very good quality. This is the result of the current report on drinking water quality published today by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). As in previous years, limit value exceedances are absolute isolated cases. Even the problem substance nitrate, which sometimes occurs in groundwater in excessive concentrations – especially where intensive agriculture is practised – has not exceeded the limit value in drinking water for several years. Also, for almost all microbiological and chemical quality requirements, over 99.9 per cent of the monitored samples comply with the strict legal requirements. In its current report for the years 2014 to 2016, the UBA has published the results of tests from all major water supplies – these supply around 88 per cent of the population in Germany. This is based on the reports submitted by the federal states to the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) and UBA.
